About Emily

Eating Disorder Recovery Coach

I have always identified as an athlete. Someone who is ambitious, goal-oriented, enjoys working with others in a team atmosphere, and thrives when put into leadership roles. Unfortunately, the same drive and determination that made me a great athlete were the characteristics that allowed my eating disorder to take hold of me mentally & physically. Having gone through recovery, I can see how much richer life is on the other side.

“Emily is a wonderful coach.
She’s a thoughtful and patient listener, and at the same time is able to concretely challenge clients and help them set and achieve goals around their behaviors, thoughts, movement, and relationship with food. Additionally, by providing support and accountability between sessions, she is able to help clients find and strengthen their healthy voice in challenging moments. Being recovered herself, she also uses her lived experience in a supportive way and truly gives clients hope that there is full life beyond an eating disorder.”

— C.C.

“Emily has a tremendous ability to connect with people on a deeply authentic level and is one of the most supportive, encouraging, and insightful people I’ve ever known. She is passionate about her work and her impact on those she touches. Emily is funny, smart, caring, genuine, purposeful, and joyful and inspires others to thrive with all of her heart and soul.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Learn How Eating Disorder Recovery Coaching Works!

What is the benefit of working with Emily as your eating disorder recovery coach?

Grö Recovery Coaching provides additional treatment support through the day-to-day struggles of recovery. Coaching can provide a crucial aspect of treatment by having the ability to accompany you in everyday situations and providing exposure and response prevention. Unlike a therapist or dietitian whose treatment is confined to hourlong office appointments, Emily can provide in-person, real-time support through meal outings, shopping for groceries or clothes, at-home cooking experiences. A coach’s role in the recovery journey is to provide extra guidance and encouragement when it may be difficult to abstain from eating disorder behaviors.

Having recovered herself, Emily, can also act as a role model for recovered living and provide a source of hope and inspiration that full recovery is possible. From her own experiences, she truly knows the pain of an eating disorder and the challenges of recovery. Through her training she is conscious of how to use her personal experience in the best interest of each client.

What is the role of an Eating Disorder Coach within the framework of a treatment team?

A coach can support the work a client is doing with their treatment team by offering extra guidance and insight when it may be difficult for a client to abstain from eating disorder behaviors. A coach’s ultimate goal is to help every client carry out the treatment plan established by the treatment team making the overall treatment more effective. A coach does not make diagnoses and cannot make nutritional/meal plans. Instead, your coach will stay in communication with your treatments to assure that the work you are doing between therapy and dietitian appointments is productive and effective.

How is a coach different from a therapist or a Dietitian?
As a Carolyn Costin Institute-trained coach Emily does not diagnose or treat conditions or have the training to delve into more underlying issues. Instead, she is trained to support the work and treatment goals her clients have with their therapist or treatment team. As a coach, the work you will do with Emily, will be focused on the “here and now” and the how’s of recovery, and to help you in accomplishing day-to-day behavior changes.
Does Emily work with clients outside of Denver?
Yes, Emily currently has clients outside of Denver and has been working with them virtually to help them achieve their treatment goals.
What specific eating disorders does Emily work with?
Emily works with individuals diagnosed with anorexia nervosa, bulimia, binge eating, orthorexia, ARFID, and OSFED. She also works with individuals who have not been medically diagnosed but are struggling with poor body image and eating disorders.
Is being recovered possible?

Yes it is possible! I have been recovered for many years and can tell you it is possible! And here is what it looks as defined by Carolyn Costin:

“Being recovered, to me, is when the person can accept his or her natural body size and shape and no longer has a self-destructive or unnatural relationship with food or exercise. When you are recovered, food and weight take a proper perspective in your life and what you weigh is not more important than who you are, in fact, actual numbers are of little or no importance at all. When recovered, you will not compromise your health or betray your soul to look a certain way, wear a certain size or reach a certain number on a scale.”
